LANDCARE
 BOGANTUNGAN RESERVE COMMITTEE

Background
Bogantungan, a tiny community of about a dozen households and too small to be included in the Postcode Book, formed its Landcare group in the early ‘90’s to rehabilitate the town’s overgrazed, eroded and weed infested town common. The erosion area was fenced, weed eradication commenced, monitoring sites out in place and a grass/weed/forb inventory began.

Landcare has generated a sense of pride within this town and now manages the maintenance of the town itself, as well as the reserve. Six members have received awards for community service, the museum was given a Highly Commended certificate in the 1999 Central Highlands Tourism Awards and in August 1999 Bogantungan won the Bush Spirit and the Natural Heritage sections of the Regional Tidy Towns Awards.

Key Projects:

  • Erosion Control and Management of the town reserve
  • An $80 000 Drought Landcare Project to control Rubbervine on 12km of creek banks and six local properties (1996)
  • Collecting over 300 local grass, weed and forb specimens
  • Opening and running a small museum and Landcare display which features the above mentioned plant collection and highlights of the town’s colourful past
  • Assisting in running Landcare education activities throughout Central Queensland

Issues of concern:

  • Lack of assistance for managing weeds on both private and crown land
  • Recognition of inland issues (erosion, weeds) needs a stronger focus within Natural Heritage Trust
  • Community groups competing with Government agencies for funding. Even a few hundred dollars can make a big difference if it is well targeted and gives a group encouragement.
